The Imo State coordinator of the National Front for the Protection of the Vulnerable (NFPV), Comrade Smart Obi has called on the governor of Imo State to immediately pay arrears of salaries and pensions owed to Imo civil servants and pensioners or risk the wrath of the people.
Speaking to some journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital Comrade Smart accused the governor of using Imo money to buy national relevance by funding the election of the controversial candidate of his Party in the State, while thousands of Imo workers and old pensioners gnash their teeth in pains of hunger and lack of the most basic needs;
“We are calling on the governor of Imo State to return home and stop funneling our funds into clout chasing and political expansionism. We have strong cause to believe the now viral rumour that the governor has set out about 10 billion Naira to support the election of Pastor Ize-Iyamu who is the candidate of the APC in Edo State.”
“It is the height of wickedness for the governor to owe workers in the State for more than three months, while some pensioners are owed as much as five months, yet he does not feel any qualms about these people’s predicament. The governor has even been severally quoted as boasting that no amount of protest or complaint will make him to pay these salaries and pensions.
“The governor must recognize that these people are not begging for handouts, but are asking for their legitimate entitlements and he wouldn’t be doing them any favours by paying them.”
The group also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in what they described as; “systematic oppression of the ordinary people in Imo State” by calling on the governor to live up to his responsibilities to the people.
